Each student created an upcycled animal made of reusable materials, they named the animal and all got a chance to show off their work. I was moved to see that even though we are so far from home the kids in Inanda remind me of the kids I know from Israel. The same kind of excitement!

Around us, the language and music come out of radios or instruments kept changing every few hundred meters. We kept walking looking for the way out before darkness. The whole way we were amazed to see that despite the bad living conditions who do not respect anyone, people were living their lives cheerfully. The harsh reality did not stop the people we met from being positive and hoping for the best.

Who knew how much fun playing Tic Tac Toe could be/Emily, Project TEN Durban Volunteer

Initially we though to teach and play Tick-Tack-Toe but then we decided it will be too childish and not challenging enough. We decided to try it out and it worked like a charm! The students loved it and played it for a whole hour, they even taught us a new way to play – and we had a great time too! After they played in couples we had a very exciting class tournament where we split up in teams and created awesome cheers!

The phenomenon of voluntarism in the world is growing and it seems that it is doing more harm than good. The Ghanaian President moved the world last year by saying that it is time for Africa to stand on its own two feet and stop relying on humanitarian aid and international development and we in TEN Uganda can only agree. Just a few months ago, an article was published that shook the world of international volunteers in Uganda: An American citizen impersonated a doctor because she wanted to "save Africa", and killed hundreds of children!!! She probably didn't mean to do harm, but with the "right" skin color you can do almost anything you want on this continent. Which is why we, at Project TEN, are so careful in our actions and speech.

Unforgettable experience in Uganda

In May, an exciting collaboration took place between Project TEN and the Machon L'Madrichim Youth Leadership Training Program. Two programs by the Jewish Agency for Israel. Twenty-four counselors who are in training in Israel have joined TEN volunteers in Uganda and enhanced the center's routine activities with significant and exciting educational events. The Machon L’Madrichim Institute trains young Jewish adults from different youth movements around the world on their way to becoming leaders in their communities of origin.
